How to change the listening port for Remote Desktop

by jeremy on Aug.25, 2009, under Technology

Note The Remote Desktop Connection Client for  the Mac supports only port 3389. 3389 is the default port.  c

I would always recommend that if you use RDP on the net to connect to pc’s,  to always change the port from its default. As with any registry change, if you don’t know what you are doing,  you can mess up the OS badly. Back up the registry before you begin.

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber

  3. On the Edit menu, click Modify, and then click Decimal.
  4. Type the new port number, and then click OK.
  5. Quit Registry Editor.

Note When you try to connect to this computer by using the Remote Desktop connection, you must type the new port.

by jeremy on Aug.25, 2009, under Cool Stuff, Strange Stuff

Jean wearers rejoice! The age old question has been solved once and for all, and now you can make up your own mind about whether your jeans make your bum big or not thanks to the butt cam. huge.37.187777

No more trusting your friends or boyfriend to tell you because Jeanswest has fitted their change rooms with cameras that take a picture of your behind in the impossible fitting jeans, with a screen to show you what exactly you look like.

Retail consultant Stephen Kulmar believes the Butt Cam will revolutionize the way we think about our jean-buying practices and induce us to buy the item.

No, this isn’t as creepy as it sounds. No, there isn’t some guy/girl behind the mirror (well not an additional one anyway). It is a good idea I think, as long as you can get over the fact that there might be somebody actually watching the same feed that you are in that room.,

    1 TB Solid State Drive

by jeremy on Aug.05, 2009, under Technology

OCZ Technology Group Inc. said today it will release its Colossus solid-state drive (SSD) in the next couple of weeks, delivering the first 3.5-inch form factor SSD with 1TB of capacity.

Like it’s midrange, consumer-grade 2.5-inch Vertex SSD, the Colossus uses an Indilinx controller. But unlike the Vertex, the new Colossus drive comes with two or four controllers depending on the capacity, and can be configured for internal RAID 0 for increased performance.

OCZ said that each controller in the Colossus will act as a virtual drive, working with the other controllers through a separate RAID controller from Silicon Image Inc.

Tested, the drive did a 223MB/sec sequential read rate and 224MB/sec sequential write rate.

    The Colossus will be available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities for $300, $650, $1200 and $2200, respectively.

The 128GB through 512GB models will have dual controllers and the 1TB version will come with four controllers.

    Ice powered AC

by jeremy on Aug.04, 2009, under Cool Stuff, Technology

A young company called Ice Energy has developed an energy-storage system that uses a tank of water to cut down on the power required for air conditioning.

The company’s Ice Bear units, roughly the size and shape of a squat refrigerator, are an adjunct to standard centralized air-conditioning units. image

Rather than run AC compressors during the hottest time of the day, the Ice Bear cools water during the night, turning it to ice. During the day, the ice cools the refrigerant as it passes through the tank, lowering the temperature inside.

This process of shifting the time that the AC unit works knocks electricity usage and costs down significantly, said Ice Energy CEO Frank Ramirez.

That’s because the AC unit doesn’t have to work as hard at night, making the overall system more energy-efficient, he said.

The company’s first products, which have their roots in research conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy, are aimed at businesses, where an Ice Bear could be placed on the roof with other HVAC (heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) systems. A residential system is also being tested.

Cutting down on energy demands during the hottest times of day is of great interest to utilities, Ramirez said.

Heavy loads on the electrical grid, as the U.S and Europe are seeing right now, cause utilities to ramp up power generation. If generation can’t keep up with the demand, then power outages result.

"Today we are faced with exploding demand for power in China, and that has fundamentally changed consumption patterns for electricity globally," Ramirez said. "That means that technologies that originally were underwritten by the Department of Energy have an opportunity to be commercialized."

Ramirez said that the Ice Bear products have been certified by the California Energy Commission and that Ice Energy is in discussions with utilities over use of its products.

The company began to ship its first product in 2007.

by jeremy on Aug.04, 2009, under Soccer

    aOnalfo

After a wonderful night in Frisco for FC Dallas or a horrible night for KC Wizards (the Harry Potters)…

The Kansas City Wizards announced Monday that the team has dismissed Head Coach Curt Onalfo. The Wizards will announce an Interim Head Coach Tuesday at the team’s Swope Park Training Center after the players have been addressed following an off-day Monday.

"Our shareholder group is thankful for Curt Onalfo’s service over the last two-and-a-half seasons, but we felt a change needed to be made," OnGoal CEO and Wizards President Robb Heineman said. "We are committed to developing high-performance and consistency around our club."

Onalfo finished with a 27-29-22 record in MLS play since taking over prior to the 2007 season. Assistant Coach Kris Kelderman has also been dismissed.

Now, all we have to do its work on getting Schellas Hyndman out as well, then all will be right in the world.

    Cash for Clunkers is Helping

by jeremy on Aug.04, 2009, under Cool Stuff

Ford reported its first U.S. sales increase in almost two years, and other automakers said sales improved as car and truck buyers were lureimaged back to showrooms by the government’s Cash for Clunkers program.

Officially the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), the program offers the owners of older cars and trucks several thousand dollars toward the purchase of a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle and scraps their older vehicle.

Automakers were stunned by the shopping crowds brought out by CARS last week, overwhelming the program’s Web site. Congress is deliberating whether to re-fund the program, which is recommended by the White House.
